Milton Keynes is truly unique by design. It’s the only UK city which has been specifically designed for growth from its very inception. One of the UK’s fastest growing cities that offers people a great place to live, work and visit, and is home to over 14,000 businesses and over 265,000 residents.  In mid-June we published our refreshed Council Plan - our vision is for a more prosperous, green and fair Milton Keynes, as we recover and grow following the COVID-19 pandemic.  Over the coming year we aim to deliver significant regeneration and new house build programmes, reduce child poverty, build new schools, tackle homelessness, review some of our major contracts (such as waste) and much more!  The finance team will be at the centre of many of these key programmes and we are now looking for people to join our team and help support these important pieces of work.

Thank you for taking the time to review our page and the roles we have available, and welcome to the MK Finance team! I, together with Anna Rulton, as joint Heads of Service and Deputy Section 151 Officers, have led the Finance service in Milton Keynes since April 2019. Since then, we have undergone significant changes, including bringing back teams that had previously been outsourced into shared services, imbedding a true finance business partnering service and most recently, in June 2021, we undertook a significant restructure in order to ensure we continue to meet the changing needs of the service and the wider organisation.

The restructured Finance team now includes several functions; business partnering to all areas of the Council, the corporate overview of financial management, including the Medium-Term Financial Plan and Statement of Accounts, housing strategy and business improvement, procurement, traded services and social care and education transactions. The team is also the client for several shared services, including accounts payable, insurance and business systems.

I am truly proud of the finance team we have in MK and how we are positioned within the wider organisation. We are a service that genuinely adds value and we take an active lead on all decisions across the Council, supporting a number of directors, partners and projects, in order to ensure we are giving the best value to our residents and businesses. Having started my career as an apprentice in the finance team 17 years ago, I have seen myself the significant growth of the town and the evolution of the finance service, resulting in the high quality, professional team we have today. We have significant ambitions as a growing town, including our bid for city status in 2022 and we are working really hard to achieve better lives for our residents, with a focus on areas such as regeneration and delivery of new council homes, child poverty, economic recovery from COVID and taking action on climate change. It really is an exciting place to work and in the finance team, you will play a key role in delivery of these priorities.

We are proud of our strong financial management in Milton Keynes and have a solid grip on all core finance business processes. We are currently projecting an in-year surplus in all areas within the business; the General Fund, Housing Revenue Account and the DSG and are on target to set a balanced budget for next financial year.

Having recently concluded our internal restructuring we are now excited to launch recruitment for a number of key vacancies within the team. This is a fast-paced area and no day will be the same! We are looking for enthusiastic, inquisitive, and passionate people who will challenge services and processes to ensure good governance and value for money and you will be part of a dynamic, energised finance team who are integral to the wider council services.
